How to Determine if a Property is a Homestead?

If you are not the Property Owner, it can be difficult to know whether the Property is a homestead.  If the Property Owners are receiving a homestead tax deduction, then the county Appraisal District where the Property will typically indicate so in the records under the “Exemptions” section with the abbreviation “HS”.  However, that is not determinative because a Property can still be a homestead even if the Property Owners have not applied for the homestead tax deduction.  However, a person can only have one homestead at a time.  Therefore, if the Property Owners own another Property which has been designated as a homestead for tax purposes, then the other Property most likely is not a homestead.
